Photos and information on the State of Texas. Texas was the 28th state to join the United States. Before joining the USA by treaty, Texas was known as The Republic of Texas and was an independent Nation from 1836 to 1845.
Texas won it's independence in 1836 after a war with the Mexican Army and it's leader Antonio López de Santa Anna. 186 Texan military and volunteers held a historic Spanish Mission, called The Alamo, that was turned into a miitary fort. For 13 days the 186 Texans held off the 1,500-5,000 of the Mexican army before losing the Battle of the Alamo. But not long after this loss, Texas General Sam Houston captured Santa Anna. Santa Anna formally signed over Texas and the Republic of Texas was formed.
Known for it's ties to the "Wild West", cowboy hats, rodeos, cows, and horses. Texas has grown to be the second best economic state in the USA, following California. Texas is a large producer of oil and has become a large technology exporter, recently surpassing California for the #1 position.
