I was born in Grand Prairie, Texas. I am the daughter of former stage actress Mandy Teefey (née Cornett) and Ricardo Joel Gomez. My father is Mexican American and my mother is of half Italian descent. Regarding my Hispanic heritage, I said: "My family does have Quinceañeras, and we go to the communion church. We do everything that's Catholic, but we don't really have anything traditional except [that we] go to the park and have barbeques on Sundays after church."My birth parents divorced when she was five years old, and she was raised as an only child by my working mother. In 2006, Mandy remarried Brian Teefey. I am named after Tejano singer Selena. In 2009 interview with People, I mentioned that I developed an early interest in acting from watching my mother prepare for and act in theater productions. I earned a high school diploma through homeschooling in May 2010. I began wearing a purity ring when I was 12 years old, and then removed it in 2010. I am also the owner of five rescue dogs and describes myself as a "huge animal-lover".
