Vincennes, Indiana...Vincennes was a key demographic position point in early American history. Founded by French Officer François-Marie Bissot, Sieur de Vincennes who later died in battle. Being the olddest continuously inhabited territory by European settlers west of the Appalachian Mountaians. The territory was pivotal in galvanizing the midwest and allowing an unimpeded path West for floods of other settlers. Vincennes was a French trading settlement for fur trades between the French and Indians until being defeated by the Britts and renamed Fort Sackville. During tbe Americsn Revolution George Rodgers Clark led a under manned team into batle contouring back Ft Sackville. With the Britts defeated Vincennes became part of Virginia, then Knox County of Northwestern Territory. In 1800, the Indiana Territory was formed and Vincennes, nestled along the Wabash River, became its capitol. William Henry Harrison became its first governor and then went on to become the United States ninth president. Grouseland, the home he built and the first brick home in the territory, still stands today and is open for tours daily. Vincennes was at the heart of many of Indiana`s firsts including site of the first Catholic church in Indiana, first county, first newspaper, first Presbyterian church, first Masonic Lodge, first bank and first medical society. In 1801, the Jefferson Academy was founded. Eventually becoming known as Vincennes University, this is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the United States. George Rogers Clark National Historical Park, located in Vincennes, Indiana, on the banks of the Wabash River at what is believed to be the site of Fort Sackville, is a United States National Historical Park. President Calvin Coolidge authorized a classical memorial and President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the completed structure in 1936.
